Yes, those trowels were a bit bigger than I had used on previous archaeological excavations! They actually worked pretty well, though, and we had other tools — some locally manufactured — to excavate when the trowels were too large for the job. One of the people working with me insisted that he could do a better job with a tool he had that was hafted like an adze. I was quite sure it wouldn’t work, but he proved me wrong.
